Bright Sun UV Light

Neue Bright Sun Generation!

Which Bright Sun fits to my terrarium?

Since the requirements of the animals can be quite different and the terrarium size affects the usability of a UV lamp as well, we are offering a wide line of different Bright Sun models:

- Bright Sun UV Desert
- Bright Sun FLOOD Desert
- Bright Sun ULTRA Desert
- Bright Sun UV Jungle
- Bright Sun FLOOD Jungle

There are “Desert” and “Jungle” models which are designed for different habitats.

The “Desert” was designed for reptiles from open landscape (e.g. deserts or savannahs) and offers an unfiltered, whitish light with high UVA performance. It enhances the earth-colours of such habitats. This model is excellent for bearded dragons and Co.
The “Jungle” has a lower colour temperature with higher yellow, red and green contents as the “Desert” lamp. The light of this lamp appears warmer and resembles the natural light conditions in forests where leaves and branches filter and bend the sunlight. The green colours in such habitats are enhanced by the “Jungle” spectrum. The UV performance is slightly lower in correspondence with the habitat. This model is excellent for forest species like green iguanas but also chameleons and Co.

The Bright Sun UV models are used for creating local sun spots. They are available from 50W up and can also be used in relatively small vivariums thanks to the low heat loss to the sides. You can use a Bright Sun UV Desert 50W in a 60x40x40 cm vivarium! The heat performance in the light cone is comparable to incandescent spot lamps of the same wattage but the total heat output is lower.
The Bright Sun UV ensures high light intensities and the right sun spots thanks to a relatively tight focus.

Contrary to that the Bright Sun FLOOD have a larger reflector which distributes the light over a wider area. They are designed for a wide scale illumination and are therefore excellent for large terrariums. Due to the great light diffusion the local light intensity and UV performance is slightly reduced compared to the Bright Sun UV. However, they are more suitable for large animals which might not fit fully under a Bright Sun UV for proper sun basking.

A very special product is the Bright Sun ULTRA which essentially is a combination of the previous two models. Thanks to a special front glass construction the light is distributed over a large area as with the FLOOD lamps but also focuses a lot of light, heat and UV in the middle of the light cone. This makes the lamp perfect for higher terrariums in which it will show a not yet known performance. It is absolutely necessary to maintain a minimum distance of 50 cm to the animals!

In general the distance to UV lamps is very important as every lamp has an area in which it is working perfect. Outside this area the UV and heat performance can be too high or too low. In addition a too small distance to a surface can overheat the lamp and cause it to fail quickly.
We are given specific advice for the optimal use of each model on the packaging with clearly arranged graphics.

More information you will also find below.

Distance dependency of UV radiation

Please consider that the UV amount on the illuminated surface will be heavily dependent on the distance to the lamp. Reducing the distance by half will quadruble the UV amount and vice versa. At 20 cm the UV performance is 4 times higher than at 40 cm. For this reason you should consider our distance recommendations for the safety of your animals.

It also has to be considered that the temperature must be right. The Bright Sun was designed in order that each model has distance area in which UV and temperature is perfect.

You will find more information for each model in the following chart.

In addition you can calculate the UV performance in relation to multiple distances with our UV Calculator. You can download this useful tool for free here.

Recommendations for duration of use and replacing lamps of age

We recommend a daily use of 8 hours. For ensuring a sufficient UV supply to your animals we recommend to replace the lamps after half a year. When using more than one lamp in a terrarium, one lamp can be used for providing UV and should be replaced regularly while the others can be used till the end of the lamp life.

Please note that the UV performance will decrease to about 50% of ist original within 2000 hours of use.

Information on Using Metal Halide Lamps:

• Metal halide lamps must only be used in suitable luminaries (e.g. Lucky Reptile Thermo Socket PRO)
• Special ballasts and igniters are necessary for use (e.g. Lucky Reptile Bright Control and Bright Control PRO)
• It has to be made certain that the lamp is correctly screwed into the socket and has full contact to ensure a proper ignition behaviour
• The distance between lamp and igniter should be as short as possible. Normally 3m should not be exceeded. Pay attention to the information of the manufacturer of the ballast/gear box
• During the ignition process of metal halide lamps voltages of several thousand volts can be reached. It is essential that special lampholders are user which are designed for up to 5 kV.
• Metal halide lamps need about 5 minutes to achieve their full brightness • After switching off a lamp it has to cool down for about 10 minutes before it can be started again.

Colour Differences:

• Due to the technology of metal halide lamps it is possible that there are colour differences between single lamps
• The spectrum of lamp is also influenced by external factors like the voltage, luminaire and ballast
• The spectrum does change with increasing lamp life. The effect also depends on the ballast. An electronic ballast will provide a more constant light output than an electromagnetic ballast
